Protect Your Chimney With a Properly Fitted Stainless Steel Chimney Chase Cover
Rain, snow, and debris can wreak havoc on your chimney, leading to leaks, water damage, and even animal infestations. Rather than stressing about whole chimney repair, did you know one of the solutions is as simple as repairing or replacing your chimney chase cover?
Here at Sleep Easy Chimney Service & Repair, we want to help you make the best decision when it comes to your chimney and fireplace – and that starts with recommending the best products available. So while there are multiple types of chimney chase covers available, we typically recommend stainless steel.
What Is a Chimney Chase Cover?
If you spent some time on our Crown Repair & Rebuild page, you know that crowns are the cement coverings that sit at the top of masonry chimneys. But what about the chases surrounding prefabricated or factory-built chimneys — don’t they need coverings too? Yes! And unfortunately, many stock chase covers (the “crowns” of the prefab chimney world) don’t hold up.
In many cases, builders simply use scrap sheet metal to seal the top of a prefab chimney, and there are problems with that:
- It’s not long-lasting. Water can rust through rather quickly
- Water can pool on top, causing the cover to sag and eventually collapse
When low-quality metal is used to seal off your prefab chimney chase, you may notice rust stains down the side of your chimney or down onto your roof. That’s certainly not attractive and it means your chase cover isn’t doing its job and isn’t keeping water out!
What Is the Difference Between a Chimney Chase Cover and a Chimney Cap?
While both a chimney chase cover and chimney cap play a role in protecting your chimney, they are two different parts of a chimney.
The biggest distinction between the two is that a chimney chase cover covers the entire top of the chimney chase, like a lid on a box. On the other hand, the chimney cap attaches directly to the flue, and covers the very top of the chimney.
A chimney chase cover shields the entire chimney from rain, snow, and debris. While the chimney cap does offer some protection against the elements, its main purpose is to prevent sparks, animals, and large debris from entering the flue.
Benefits of Stainless Steel Chase Covers
While chimney chase covers can be made from various materials such as galvanized steel or aluminum, stainless steel offers several advantages over these choices like:
Durability and Longevity:
Stainless steel is highly resistant to rust, corrosion, and harsh weather conditions. This means a stainless steel chase cover will last for many years!
Heat Resistance:
Stainless steel will also not warp or melt at high temperatures, and this fire resistance is important when it comes to protecting your chimney.
Low Maintenance:
Because it’s so resistant to rust and corrosion, a stainless steel cover requires minimal upkeep. Don’t confuse the word, minimal, with no upkeep. You should still schedule regular inspections to make sure there aren’t any issues with your chimney and fireplace that you’re unaware of.
Versatility:
Stainless steel chase covers can be customized to fit different chimney sizes and styles, making sure your chimney is properly protected.
